Set within the rolling landscape of Spanish Oaks in Austin, this methodically designed residence brings together European influence and modern sensibility, balancing tradition with a distinctly contemporary point of view. Positioned along a bluff with sweeping Hill Country views and access to Barton Creek, the home was created as a place where architecture, materiality and daily life feel connected.

Designed by architect John Hathaway with interiors by Blair Burton, the home embraces what the team describes as “old-world bones with fresh skin,” a layered approach that pairs classic references with clean, modern execution.

From the outset, the home’s orientation was intentional. Built on previously untouched land, the structure was carefully placed to preserve existing trees while maximizing natural views. This connection to the surrounding environment informs every design decision, from the layout to the collection of materials used throughout.

Inside, a sense of warmth softens the architectural forms. White oak paneling, custom millwork and natural stone surfaces create a palpable foundation, while subtle tonal shifts, soft greens, deep blues and earthy neutrals, echo the landscape beyond.

At the heart of the home, the kitchen serves as both a functional workspace and a gathering place. Dual waterfall islands encourage movement and interaction: one dedicated to preparation, the other to connection. Surrounding spaces flow gracefully, guided by thoughtful transitions in material and tone.

Throughout the interiors, layering becomes a defining element. Velvet upholstery, walnut millwork and plaster finishes introduce depth and softness, creating spaces that feel both polished and livable. The dining room, framed by darker wood tones and a structured ceiling detail, offers contrast while maintaining cohesion with adjacent rooms.
