A Journey to the Heart of English Hardware | Alexander Marchant Visits Frank Allart

Exploring the Legacy of Frank Allart in Birmingham

In May, Alexander Marchant had the privilege of attending an exclusive factory tour hosted by Frank Allart, one of England’s most respected manufacturers of luxury architectural hardware. Representing our team were our General Manager Rene Pettyjohn and a Junior Project Manager Bri James, who traveled to England for a firsthand look at the craftsmanship, history, and manufacturing processes that have made Frank Allart a cornerstone of fine English hardware for more than a century.

Our hosts, Bill and Toby McGrail, welcomed us throughout the visit and shared not only the history of Frank Allart but also their vision for the future of British-made luxury hardware. The trip began in London, where our hosts provided a wonderful introduction to English culture and history. Walking through the city’s iconic streets, surrounded by centuries of architecture, gave valuable context to the design traditions that continue to influence luxury homes today. From historic landmarks to vibrant neighborhoods, London offered a glimpse into the heritage and attention to detail that define so many British-made products.

From London, we boarded a train north to Birmingham, England’s second-largest city and a place deeply woven into the story of manufacturing. Known during the Industrial Revolution as the “City of a Thousand Trades,” Birmingham became a global center for metalworking, engineering, and craftsmanship. It was here that countless products were designed, manufactured, and exported around the world.

While Birmingham may not be as familiar to Americans as London, its cultural influence is surprisingly significant. Music fans recognize it as the birthplace of legendary rock band Black Sabbath and its iconic frontman Ozzy Osbourne. Television audiences know Birmingham through the hit series Peaky Blinders, which dramatizes the city’s industrial-era history. Visitors can also explore Birmingham’s extensive canal network, often surprising first-time travelers who learn that the city has more miles of canals than Venice. These waterways once served as vital transportation routes for the factories and workshops that powered Britain’s industrial success.

As if the trip needed any more excitement, our visit coincided with a historic moment for the city. During our stay, Birmingham was alive with celebration as the beloved local football club Aston Villa captured the UEFA Europa League title. The energy throughout the city was impossible to miss. Streets, pubs, and public squares were filled with supporters proudly wearing club colors and celebrating long into the evening.

Our team embraced the opportunity to experience English football culture firsthand, joining local fans in a neighborhood pub to watch the match. It was an unforgettable experience and a unique glimpse into the passion and pride that sports bring to the Birmingham community. The atmosphere added an unexpected and memorable chapter to a trip already rich with history, craftsmanship, and English tradition.

Frank Allart’s story began in 1914 when George Allart established the company in a small Birmingham workshop. Initially producing patterns and brass foundry work for architectural, marine, and railway applications, the company quickly earned a reputation for quality and innovation. Over the decades, Frank Allart expanded its offerings while remaining committed to manufacturing in England. Today, more than 110 years later, the company continues to design and manufacture luxury door, window, and cabinet hardware in Birmingham, combining traditional craftsmanship with modern technology. The company has invested heavily in advanced CNC machinery, CAD design systems, and precision finishing processes while maintaining the hand-finishing techniques that distinguish true luxury hardware.

Walking through the factory was an extraordinary experience. Unlike many manufacturers that have shifted production overseas, Frank Allart continues to make its products in-house. Every stage of production—from machining and polishing to plating and final inspection—reflects a commitment to quality that is increasingly rare in today’s marketplace. Seeing the skilled artisans at work reinforced why the brand has become synonymous with authentic English hardware.

What stood out most during the visit was the balance between heritage and innovation. Frank Allart’s products remain rooted in classic English design, yet they continue to evolve to meet the needs of contemporary luxury homes. Whether creating traditional brass lever sets, elegant window hardware, or modern precision-machined collections, the company approaches each product with the same dedication to craftsmanship that has defined the brand for generations.

What made the visit particularly meaningful was that the tour was personally hosted by the leadership of Frank Allart. Our team had the opportunity to spend time with Bill and Toby McGrail, members of the multi-generational family leadership that has guided the company for decades and will continue to shape its future. Their passion for British manufacturing, commitment to quality, and dedication to preserving the company’s heritage were evident throughout the visit. Rather than simply touring a factory, we gained insight into the values and vision that have allowed Frank Allart to remain one of England’s most respected architectural hardware manufacturers for more than a century.
