Located in Clarksville, Austin, this custom residence serves as architect Michael Hsu’s own home, designed as a personal exploration of space, material and modern living. Hsu approached the project with a response to modern design, where scale, proportion and materiality are composed to create a home that feels both intentional and grounded.
Rather than relying on overt historical references, the design focuses on how the home interacts with its surroundings. Clean architectural lines, a simple material palette and well-proportioned volumes create a sense of cohesion within the neighborhood while still offering a distinctly modern presence.

At the core of the home is a central courtyard, a defining feature that secures the layout and enhances natural light throughout the interior. This inward-facing approach creates privacy while strengthening the connection between indoor and outdoor living. Large steel-framed windows and glass doors allow spaces to open effortlessly to the courtyard and pool, upholding a fluid, open way of living.
The interiors are decorated with texture and material contrast. Plaster walls, reclaimed wood and layered finishes introduce warmth and depth, softening the clean architectural framework. The result is an environment that feels both refined and livable, where each material is chosen for its tactile quality as much as its visual impact.

Subtle detailing and a curated blend of furnishings add moments of personality without disrupting the overall sense of calm. Contemporary artwork and balanced tones create visual interest while maintaining a cohesive, minimal aesthetic.

This residence reflects a broader evolution in Austin luxury home design, where architecture prioritizes livability, natural light and a strong connection to the outdoors. By focusing on spatial experience and material integrity, the home offers a modern approach that is both classic and connected to its environment.
