Fiesta is a deep-rooted San Antonio tradition that has been going on for 127 years. And this year we wanted to join the camaraderie by making our 1st EVER Fiesta Medal.

What the heck is Fiesta?
Fiesta was started in 1890, in San Antonio, Texas to honor the hero’s of the Alamo & the Battle of Jacinto with a battle of flowers. The first Battle of Flowers Parade had horse-drawn carriages, bicycles decorated with fresh flowers & floats carrying children dressed as flowers and flowers littering the streets. The Battle of Flowers Parade is the only parade in the U.S. that is planned & directed exclusively by women. Today, we might have more modern vehicles, but the same legacy & tradition continues.
Where does the medal come in?
The origin of the Fiesta medal dates back to 1946, when the Texas Cavaliers created specialized coins to take to hospital children as a way for them to still participate in the festivities. Through the years the medal tradition grew, but it wasn’t a thing till the 1970s when Lt. Col. Childers was looking to generate camaraderie with the public & came up with the idea of making a Fiesta themed medal for the general to hand out during events. The rest is history!
